online learning

To say the Internet has changed the way the world operates would be an understatement.  It has added a level of convenience to daily tasks and has simplified the way information is derived.  The usefulness of the Internet is ever apparent in the number of professionals who utilize it to telecommute.  However, telecommuting is not just for the workplace, it has made its way into the classroom through online learning courses.

Online learning offers students the ability to further their education in a classroom setting that fits into their schedule.  Flexibility is the central theme in online learning.  Students can attend classes from the comfort of their home and at a time that fits their unique needs. All they need is an computer, modem and Internet connection.

Like traditional classroom courses, online classes are led by a qualified instructor who develops the curriculum, conducts class activities, gives projects, answers any questions and grades work.  Instructors are available for questions in a chat room setting or messages can be sent through a bulletin board system.  In addition, students are able to utilize these same methods to interact with other classmates and engage in thought provoking discussions relevant to coursework.

Students who take online courses typically find the following beneficial:

  • Setting their own classroom and study schedules.
  • No commute time.
  • Direct feedback from instructors.
  • The ability to organize thoughts more clearly by writing them down.
  • Interacting with students from different geographical locations.

Is Online Learning Right for Me?

The only way a student can really know for sure if an online setting will fit their needs is to give it a try. However, there are a few qualifications that make some students better candidates than others.

In order to be successful in an online learning environment a student should posses the following:

  • Access to a computer with Internet- Computers can either MAC or PC however, a high speed connection is very important.
  • Computer literacy- A student needs to be comfortable with installing software and possess a general knowledge of the Internet.
  • Adequate typing skills- All work is completed on the computer, therefore, students must be proficient in typing.
  • Adequate reading comprehension- Many classroom materials are in a written format. Students should be able to read and understand these materials.
  • The ability to work independently- While online courses offers the convenience of learning on a student’s schedule, they must possess the fortitude to get work completed.
